Slovakia Under Scrutiny

The Slovak daily SME and the weekly Slovak Spectator report about a new head of the Slovak Intelligence Service (SIS): Ľubomír Gažák, the former head of the Slovak Defence Industry Association and a former member of the board of arms traders DMD Holding, PPS Detva and ZŤS.

The nomination has not been confirmed by the SIS itself, as the SIS h does not comment on personnel matters, but was obtained from two independent sources, the Sme daily wrote.

SME critizes the nomination, because as an SIS officer Gažák will be responsible for controlling the arms trade he used to promote. In other words: Slovakia is nominating a goat to become the gardener...

The SIS plays a key role in monitoring Slovakia’s legal and illegal trade in weapons to prevent weapons to be sent to destinations and buyers that could embarrass the country internationally.

During a former research concerning spare parts for tanks for Sudan and small weapons found in Angola, a spokesman of the Slovak government confessed deficitis in international investigation capacity due to scarce financing of the Slovak services.
